This Class 40 gray cast iron conical mold can be used to cast any precious/ semi-precious metal into a standard button shape for easy storage and/or transport.
While manufactured for use with the Microwave Gold Kiln this mold may be used with any form of smelting equipment such as common electric or gas fired furnaces.
The weight of each mold is just a few ounces over 1lb. Each are machined with a recessed outer shoulder ring to allow easy handling with your crucible tongs (no handle required). The conical cavity is a 1.00" deep X 1.850" upper diameter (typical) which allows up to 310 grams or 10 TROY ounces of pure gold to be cast into a convenient button shape.
This button mold is made to last a lifetime compared to graphite molds which are eventually flux eroded or broken when dropped and are then rendered unusable.
To use, one only needs to preheat the mold to a sufficient temperature prior to the pour to avoid splash from hot metal contacting a cold surface. Typically 500F to 600F is adequate. This temperature can be easily achieved using any electric hot plate or gas burner. It can even be preheated within your home oven. (Just don't let your spouse see you do it!)
